Mission

We at Dr.Software are striving to create engineering software that will allow students and professionals to focus on what's important: behavior, rather than on the bookkeeping details required to obtain numerical results. Our company mission is to produce the highest quality, easiest to use tools and multimedia environments for engineers -- Direct Manipulation modeling embedded in rich user interfaces sets us apart.

Overview

Dr. Software LLC was founded in 1997 to build on and market engineering software rooted in the research of Professor Gregory R. Miller at the University of Washington. We have two primary directions at Dr. Software:
  • simulation tools and multimedia content for engineering education, and
  • general finite element-based modeling tools.

Our first product, Visual Mechanics, began shipping in June, 1997. It is now available from Dr. Software directly.

We are currently selling three engineering tools: Dr. Frame3D, Dr. Frame and Dr. Beam Pro !

About the name

No, we do not produce and sell medical software! no we can't find and erradicate computer viruses. The name Dr. Software comes from the fact that some of the ancestors of our current products were developed for use in education. -- for examples, Dr. Stress is used by students to examine stress tensors, Dr. Beam to examine beam behavior, and Dr. Baldwin to simulate a material testing lab. The Dr. in the titles of these programs indicates expertise and a consultation capacity. With so many Dr.s working for us, the name Dr.Software was a natural choice.

Founding Members

Professor Gregory R. Miller (Lead Technology Advisor):
Dr. Miller is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Washington. He has taught civil and Structural Engineering at the U of W since 1984. Greg's research interests span computational issues related to solid mechanics and engineering education.

Stephen C. Cooper (Manager):
A former Ph.D. student of Greg's at the UW, Stephen's primary research interests relate to the design, implementation and use of simulation and multimedia tools in engineering.

Michael D. Rucki, Ph.D. (Manager):
A former Ph.D. student of Greg's at the UW, Michael has researched a range of finite element-related issues and has worked in industry as a finite element modeling specialist.

Partnerships & Licensing

Do you like the direct manipulation environment, but find our existing tools don't exactly fit your needs? We are open to contract and partnership-type relationships to either customize our existing apps, tie into your apps, or develop entirely new products. Dr. Software has expertise in object-oriented development using C++ and Java, multimedia educational development, engineering analysis, and interface design.

Marketing

Our products are making a significant impact on the educational and professional markets -- direct manipulation & rich user interfaces make our products useful in a wide range of scenarios: from education to multimedia to engineering design... We have recently released Dr. Frame 3D and look forward to hearing from potential partners and resellers regarding its commercialization.
